I was in southern California a few years ago and spotted this pickup truck loading leftover items from a garage sale in San Clemente, a small beach town near San Diego. While this is an extreme example, I have weighed some caravans and utes that are overloaded by as much as 450kgs!
A properly loaded caravan is a safe caravan on the road. ‘Safe’ meaning, protection for your caravan, your towing vehicle, your family, and the others on the road. ‘Overloading’ also means ‘Unroadworthy’. Police and insurers immediately declare an overloaded vehicle as unroadworthy. This means you may have to reduce your load where your caravan stands, on the side of the highway. You may be able to have it picked up on a flatbed tow truck or leave it abandoned. In any case, when a caravan or tow vehicle is overloaded, it cannot be driven on the highway.
Know before you go! Know your weights. A commercial weighbridge will not give you all the answers. You may be within maximum weights, but you may be out of balance. A wheel by wheel weight check will also check your rig’s balance. Too much weight in the back or front of your caravan or ute can affect highway performance. It can also affect steering and braking.
