Gold Coast Caravan Maintenance

Gold Coast Mobile Weigh also offers: Gold Coast caravan repairs and maintenance.

Keeping a caravan ready for the road demands a long list of checks. How is the plumbing, are there leaks in the supply lines to the taps? Is the fire extinguisher compliant? What about roof and window leaks? How thoroughly do you check for water stains under the sink, water leaks in the back of the wardrobe or under the bed near the water heater?

Gold Coast Mobile Weigh is now offering new services to help you keep your caravan or camper on the road and safe. Wheel bearings, brakes, hitches, lighting, wiring, batteries, and plumbing all need constant maintenance. Don’t let these items go rusty and seize! Especially if you visit seaside locations. The salt laden air near a surf beach will instantly cause surface rust and lead to corrosion and within weeks, parts begin to degrade.

We recommend keeping your maintenance schedule on a rotational basis. Schedule your maintenance so you don’t have to do everything at once. For example, a roof and window resealing project can take a whole day or even days, depending on the length of time since the last reseal. Schedule the roof for one part of the year, then the walls and windows another time.

Seaside corrosion can be easily prevented with simple products like WD40, fish oil, boiled linseed oil, and other rust treatments. WD40 and boiled linseed oil will wash off after rain, so sometimes a longer lasting treatment is better in more exposed areas. If you have a rusty hinge or bracket inside a locker where it will not get wet, spray some WD40.

Look around your tow hitch and treat whenever you see surface rust forming with a sustainable rust treatment. The same goes for the areas around the gas cylinders, suspension parts and around the rear bumper. Service the mounting nuts and studs on the spare wheel. This way the spare will be easy to access when you need it.

Wheels, bearings and brakes: You can never over service these crucial parts of your caravan. Some maintenance is as simple as checking the tyre pressures, treads and general tyre condition. A simple wheel bearing check may be as easy as feeling the hub when you stop for a rest break. If the hubs of each wheel feel warm or cool, then the indication is generally great. If one or more of the hubs are so hot that you cannot leave your hand there, you have the indications of either a worn or loose wheel bearing, or a locking brake. If this happens, get your bearings and brakes checked immediately. Sometimes a deflating tyre will generate this type of heat too.

At home, you can inspect the caravan’s seals around windows, doors, and hatches. If there is water inside a storage hatch after rain, then you need to check where this water is seeping in. Is the rubber around the door beginning to crack and fall apart? Sometimes these are easy to replace.

Always keep your ceiling in check. Watch for water during rain, and look for water stains and darker mould. This could be indicating a gap in the roof seal somewhere. The roof vent sealant may be cracking. All these items are easily repaired when you attend to them right away.

Remove everything from the backs of cupboards and the storage areas under the bed. Check for dampness or water stains. Water can reach these locations from a loose plumbing line, a leaking window, or even a roof hatch. Always treat these leaks as soon you discover them.
