Boat, Trailer, Landcruiser 300 Weight Check

There are motorhomes, houseboats, boats, caravans, and now a Boat-A-Home? Gold Coast Mobile Weigh checked the weight of a boat and trailer Monday instead of a caravan weight check.

I’ve been to Hope Island several times in recent weeks and today I had the opportunity to weigh a very heavy looking Boat-A-Home on the trailer. I was curious to see how this 2023 Toyota Landcruiser 300 series would weigh-in with this fibreglass home on the water.

This boat appeared heavy! The concept of this boat is to easily be used as a caravan on land, and a boat when launched. The trailer consists of a stairway mounted to the front of the trailer to make for easy access into the ‘boat’ when it’s on land.

As a caravan or a boat, this leisure craft has all the fancy options. Air conditioning, kitchen, dining saloon, rear deck with a food serving bench. Two outboard motors drive the boat on water.

It was a fine and hot day in Hope Island today, to the boat trailer weight session was a challenge in the open air. The aluminium trailer weight limitations shows 3,500kgs ATM and a GTM also of 3,500kgs

The boat was loaded for an extended roadtrip and a stay on Sydney Harbour, and the Toyota Landcruiser was also loaded for a few days on the road.

How will it weigh in?

The great news is that this combination of boat, caravan, trailer and towing vehicle all came in under the maximums. Each wheel scale calculated the axle loads and the tow ball scales came in at only 215kgs. The front and rear axles were well balanced with the front axle of the trailer less than 200kgs heavier than the front. This demonstrated a low-at-the-front trailer attitude and the driver said that a recent hitch-height adjustment showed great comfort on the highway when towing.

A rainy day caravan weight check also in Hope Island …

The customers had a schedule to meet and the heavy rainfall did not deter us from accurately weighing this new Regent Caravans caravan and Landcruiser on Jabiru Island, near Hollywell and Hope Island on the Gold Coast.

This particular caravan weight check was to see how much payload could be carried. The Landcruiser has many accessories including a roof rack, side steps and a bull bar. The all terrain tyres also contributed to the vehicle’s standard weight. Toolbox drawers are fitted inside this ‘cruiser, so it was expected that the GVM and rear axle weight would be over.

The customer decided for a GVM upgrade to handle the rear axle, and also elected to reduce the number of tools in the tool drawers. There was ample capacity in the caravan, so the owner found it was possible to add more weight just forward of the axles in the caravan.
